Dal Goje / Varan Fal/ Dal Dhokli (Phara)

In daily routine it is a very big question… What to Cook in Lunch or Dinner?  To solve this question sometimes my partner comes to rescue and this time he taught me new recipe which I am going to share with you all.

Dal Goje (Phara) is traditional North Indian recipe and can be prepared in many ways. In Maharashtra we call it Varan Fal; in Gujarat / Rajasthan- Dal Dhokli. But it is just a slight different than Varan Fal and Dal Dhokli. This Monsoon try something different- hot & soupy recipe…

Cook Time: 15 mins

Rest time: 10 mins

Serve: 4 People

Type: Main course

Ingredients:

For Stuffing:

  • 2 tbsp oil.
  • 1/2 tsp Asafoetida ,1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds, 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds, curry leaves, 2 chopped green chillies, 1 tsp ginger- garlic (crushed).
  • 1 chopped Onion, 2 tbsp Green Peas.
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder, 1/2 tsp Red Chilli Powder, 1 tsp Garam Masala, 1/2  tsp Coriander Powder.
  • 2 Boiled Potato, chopped Coriander Leaves.

For Dough:

2 cup Wheat Flour, Salt, 1 tbsp Oil, 1 tsp sesame seeds, 1 tsp carom seeds (Ova/ Ajwain) and Water as required.

Stuffing Preparation:

  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add asafoetida, mustard Seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and crushed ginger-garlic, green chilli, saute them.
  • Add chopped onion, green peas, salt, mix well.
  • After that add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, coriander powder.
  • Lower the flame; add Potato and chopped coriander leaves mix well.
  • Switch off the flame and let them cool down.

Method of Preparation:

  • Make small balls of the dough.
  • Roll it into small disc shape and fill the mixture into it and wrap it like Karaji/ Gujiya ( as shown in the Video):-

For Dal Preparation:  

  • 1 cup Split Pigeon Peas / Tur dal (cooked).
  • 2 tbsp oil.
  • 1/2 tsp Asafoetida ,1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds, 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds, Curry Leaves, 1tsp Ginger- Garlic (crushed).
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder, 1/2 tsp Red Chilli Powder, 1 tsp Garam Masala, 1/2  tsp Coriander Powder.
  • 2-3 Kokum 1/2 tsp Jaggery, Chopped Coriander Leaves.

Method of Preparation:

  • Let’s start with adding 2 tbsp oil in the Heated Vessel.
  • Then add asafoetida, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, 1 tsp Ginger- Garlic (crushed).
  • Next saute the mixture till the Garlic turned golden on medium Flame, and then add Split Pigeon Peas/ Tur dal (cooked).
  • Add Water, Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder, garam masala. Mix it properly.
  • Then boil it and add Kokum, Jaggery now let it cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Next, add prepared Karaji/ Gujiya and cook it for 6-7 minutes.
  • After this transfer the Dal Goje into the Serving bowl then add Coriander Leaves on top and your Dal Goje is ready to serve.
